Egypt Day 3

Sphinx and Pyramid

Day 3 was much more exciting than day 2. We saw so much on Day 2. First, we went to see the Great Pyramids. They are huge! We were able to go into the pyramid of Khafre, the 2nd pyramid. It was very hot and sticky inside the pyramid. Due to grave robbers, the pyramid chamber was found empty.

After taking lots of fun pictures are the pyramids, we went on camel rides. Riding a camel is a very interesting experience. I felt like I was going to fall off the entire time. We only rode the camels for a short while, but we got some great views of the pyramids while on the camels.

We then went to the Sphinx. There were so many people there it was crazy. We learned that the Sphinx was made by the Pharaoh Khafre (the builder of the 2nd pyramid). It was so crazy to be standing at the feet of something that you had learned about all your life.

After the Sphinx we went to the ancient city of Memphis. Memphis was the capital of the Old Kingdom Pharaohs. The main attraction at Memphis was a giant statue of Pharaoh Ramses II. Ramses II was a major builder who built many of the attractions we visited.

We then went to the Step Pyramid of Pharaoh Djoser. The Step Pyramid was the first man-made pyramid structure (according to our Egyptian guide). The pyramid was accompanied by a large funerary temple. It was awesome. While at Djoser’s pyramid, we also visited the tomb of one of his scribes. It was beautiful. The walls were covered in amazing, still-colored paintings of scenes of daily Egyptian life (only Pharaoh’s were allowed to have religious paintings on their walls).

We had a late lunch, hung around Cairo for a little while, and then we headed for the train station. We took an overnight train to Luxor. It was… interesting. We had little two person rooms. There were two chairs on a wall that was later turned into bunk-beds. There was also a little sink and storage area. Shortly after boarding the train (at 8:30 pm), we were served dinner in our rooms. I think I ate just the bread and a little of the rice. After dinner the train attendant turned our chairs into beds and my field trip roommate, Carlee went to bed. They assigned us different roommates for field trips cause our rooms at the center have four people and most our hotel rooms were for two. Since Carlee was sick and in bed, I went wandering around the 5 train cars that were just for the students. I played cards on the floor of one of the cars and then went to bed myself. I think I slept for two hours on the train. It was really hard to sleep while the train was moving and stopping and shaking. It sure was an interesting night.
