I’m here!

I arrived safely in Israel yesterday evening, local time (9 hours ahead of Utah).  The plane ride was long, but the flight attendants were nice and let us walk around a lot.  We also had personal TVs and a free selection of movies and games.  I only slept about an hour.  I stayed up late last night unpacking, so I think I’m almost adjusted to the time here.  I’m just tired.  I need more sleep tonight.

Yesterday, we just did some basic orientation and unpacking.  Today we had more orientation and then went on a tour through Jerusalem.  It was so cool!  I’m so excited to wander around, get completely lost, and go shopping. :)  I got half a dozen business cards from shop owners who were so happy to see a new bunch of “Young Mormons.”  All the locals refer to the Center as the “Mormon University” (The street sign pointing toward the center even says “Mormon University”).  A lot of the shop owners told us about their special “BYU prices,” and one owner even told us that Steve Young had been to his shop twice.

Two of my classes start tomorrow: Ancient Near Eastern Studies and Old Testament Studies.  The other classes start next week sometime.  It’ll be interesting to see how much work we’re going to have, and how much time we have to play around the city.  I have to keep my grades up for nursing, so we’ll see how it goes.

There are a number of other pre-nursing students here at the center.  There’s a mixture of old and new program people and those who have applied, or who are still working on their pre-reqs.  I’m going to see if we can get something set up for some of us to go volunteer at one of the local hospitals or hospices.  There are a whole bunch of them relatively close to the center.

Anyways, I am going to go get ready for more orientation meetings this afternoon.  I miss you all!

Wow it sounds like you are having an eventful week. I’m glad you got there safe. I got in Idaho okay and am about to start school myself. Kind of nervous about the whole 3.7 gpa keeping up. My roommates I didn’t know about yesterday, but now that I’ve gotten to know them better I think we will get along well. They are very athletic so that’ll be a push for me and really good for me. They are all older than I am though so they will probably be gone from the apartment which means I’m going to have to find something to do to keep me busy. Or just find other people to keep me busy. Last year I had a good way of having Ryan or Jeff keep me busy and mostly my roommates though. I think I might try to volunteer at an elementary school if I can. I don’t know how I would get there though. I don’t have a car. All of my roommates but me have one though. I don’t want to be bumming rides. That might get annoying to them. Oh guess what!? I got a lap top! I’m so excited! I got a printer, too, for free :) I’m really jealous of your apartments I’ve decided. My room is so small and I get to share a desk. Now that I have a laptop it shouldn’t be too much of a problem, but I still wouldn’t mind having one of my own just to keep from invading on space that erica (my new roommate) would like. She’s pretty cool I don’t think she would mind. The even cooler thing about her is if she did I think she would tell me. Which is really really nice. So I don’t have to worry about people talking behind my back and such. That happens way too much with girls I decided. Pretty much the only thing that’s really been getting me is I miss my family more than anything else in this world. They are all so cool! I’m way excited to go back to BYU-Provo next year and be close to them! and all of my old friends. Well that’s the update on my life. I’m glad to hear you are doing well. I’ll be praying for you! Have a wonderful time there! Make lots of new friends, but don’t forget us oldies :) I love you tons! TTFN
