I can’t believe it’s time to head to Egypt! We leave at 630 am tomorrow morning. Crazy! Anyways, what has been happening? I’ve had lots of class and homework, but I’ve been out to the Old City a couple of times. I spent all day Wednesday out in the city (we had a free day). I went shopping in the morning and went to the Western City for lunch. I had my first Shwarma. It was way good. Then my roommate Bekah and I came back to the center and found some people to come with us to Me’a She’arim. It’s the Ultra-Orthodox Jewish area of the city. Everyone there wears full suits or dresses and all the guys have cool hats and long, curled locks of hair. I wish I could have taken pictures of them, but if you do you might get stoned. It was really intesting to see all the Orthodox people. I felt like I had gone back in time.Â
On Thursday, I had class in the morning, ran a few errands before lunch (like changing my money into Egyptian money), and then we went to the Israel Museum. I went to the Shrine of the Book and saw the Dead Sea Scrolls. I also saw a huge model of the city. It was really interesting. The main part of the museum was closed for renovations, but it had a really fun art garden and a really creapy exhibit of Chinese art. It was a fun trip overall.
Yesterday we were stuck in the Center as we often are on Fridays. Friday is when all the Muslims go to the Temple Mount to pray and then in the evening, Shabbat starts for the Jews. These to things together equal lots of people and not much open, so we tend to stay here. It was extra hard to get out yesterday due to the start of Yom Kippur, one of the most sacred Jewish Holidays. Because we couldn’t go anywhere yesterday, we did a service project at the center. We cleaned out the area around a tomb that was discovered on the Center property a number of years ago. It was really fun. It’s too bad they took all the actual coffins away, so now there are just empty holes in the rock. :)Â
Anyways, I should probably be getting to bed before too long. I have to wake up at 5 so I’m not late. I hope all is well! I’ll write when I return from my 8 day trip in Egypt!
