Post-Galilee Week

Today is our 2nd to last Shabbat! We all can’t believe it. It’s insane. We all love this city so much and we don’t want to leave it. Let’s see, where did I leave off.

Tuesday was a normal day. We had class in the morning from 8-11:15. After lunch, half the center, at least, headed out into the city. We group went to the money changer (Aladdin!) and then went shopping the Old City. I bought almost the last of what I need to buy before going home. It was a very successful day. Tuesday evening we had Enrichment. We had a number of mini classes. My class made wassail. It was so good!

On Wednesday, we started off the day with a field trip. We had Danny Seidmann, a prominent lawyer and political activist in Jerusalem, take us on a tour of the Separation Wall. He talked about what the wall was achieving and what it was destroying. It was very interesting. We talked about options if the city was partitioned. He said that the center will likely be right on the border if the city is partitioned. It’ll be interesting, that’s for sure.

The Separation Wall

This is a section of the Separation Wall. Scary looking, huh?

Wall graffiti

There was graffiti covering the wall. I thought this one was interesting. Seeing the wall makes me really sad. Although there have been less attacks since the wall went up, I really believe there are better ways to go about achieving peace.

After the field trip, we had class so not much happened for the rest of the day.

On Thursday, I woke up really early. We had breakfast at 5:30. Students, but no teachers, loaded the buses at 6. We went on a student-led trip to Eilat. Eilat is on the Gulf of Aqaba, part of the Red Sea. The Gulf of Aqaba has a beautiful coral reef. The drive between Jerusalem and Eilat takes four hours. We drove down, and met our lifeguard around 11. We then snorkeled, lounged on the beach, and ate lunch between 11 and 3. It was beautiful! There were bridges down to the edge of the coral bench. That way we wouldn’t walk on the coral. Once you got into the water off a bridge, you could snorkel all down the edge of the reef and about 30 yards out to sea. There were big buoys marking where you could swim and where boats could drive. The coral was beautiful. There were fish of all sizes and colors. There were some two-foot-long rainbow fish that were absolutely gorgeous. It was so amazing. There was also a large free standing coral a ways out from the coral bench. It was fun because you could dive down and swim all around it. I have so much fun. After we were kicked out of the water around 3, we went out to a mall in Eilat. We walked around the mall. I ate shawarma (lamb meat in a wrap) and a McFlurry. It was yummy. After walking around, we hopped back on the buses and drove home. We got home at about 9. It was an awesome day.

On Friday, we had class in the morning and then 6 of my friends and I headed out to Mahane Yehuda (the open-air market in West Jerusalem). We had a blast walking around and trying random foods. I had challah bread, Sahlab, falafel, and donuts. I guess that’s what happens when I skip lunch. It was a lot of fun.

Today we had choir practice before church. Our student choir is performing a concert here at the center tomorrow night. I am both singing and playing the flute for the concert. We are performing 12 songs. Because of the concert tomorrow, we performed three of them at church today. All three were based off Christmas hymns and two of which we saw for the first time this morning. I thought we did pretty well. Our choir director is one of the service couples here at the center. He has written songs for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. He is amazing. He arranged all of the songs we sang this morning. He never performs the same song twice if he can help it. Today the auditorium where we have church (with a beautiful view of the city) was packed. There were so many tour groups going through today. It was the fullest that it has been in years. It was fun to sing for so many people. After church I practiced my music for the concert tomorrow and then spent a lot of time blogging. It’s crazy how long this takes. :) Tonight the sunset was beautiful, so here’s a couple pictures for your enjoyment.
