Egypt Day 8

Sunrise on Sinai

After going to bed at 11, we got our wake-up call at 1 am.  We crawled out of bed, got dressed, and went down to the reception area of the hotel for hot chocolate.  We then loaded buses and headed to the base of Mount Sinai.

We started hiking at 2 am.  The hike wasn’t strenuous, but it was a constant uphill hike.  We reached near the summit at 4.  We stayed just below the summit for about half an hour because it is always colder on the top of the mount.

At 4:30 am we climbed the last leg of the hike and sat around the feet of a church built on the top of the mount.  The sky started lightening at 5 and the sun rose around 5:30.  It was beautiful.  I love sunrises and sunsets.  It was a wonderful sight.

After the sun rose, my religion class (our group of 80 students is divided into 2 religion classes; our religion classes are our bus groups) hiked a little ways off the summit and then had a lecture about the Ten Commandments.  It was a wonderful lecture in an amazing setting.

After our lecture, we climbed down the mount, loaded the buses, and drove back to the hotel.  After showering, my roommate Carlee and I both fell fast asleep.  Because we were asleep we missed the memo that our departure time had moved from 1 pm to 12:30.  We went to the hotel restaurant at 12:25 and ate one of the fastest meals I’ve had in a long time.  We then loaded the buses, drove to the border, spent lots of time crossing the border, and then drove the long drive to the JC.  Because we spent so long crossing the border (due to a couple of people who left things behind and one girl who was carrying a bag that wasn’t hers: it was another one of the girl’s bag, but she was on crutches), our bus driver got permission for us to drive straight through the West Bank home.  Our teachers didn’t tell us that’s what we were doing, but some of us figured it out when we discovered we were driving next to the Dead Sea.

Anyways, we arrived at the Jerusalem Center at 10 pm, had dinner, and went straight to bed.  It was a wonderful week in Egypt.  I saw so many cool things, but it felt very good to come home to the JC.

Wow, Sarah! That is incredible! It made me really happy to hear you were doing so well. I miss you a lot, but knowing that you are enjoying yourself somewhere else helps. Life in idaho is pretty much the same. It’s really fun and I love coming back from home and just playing around. I do do homework don’t worry. it’s not all play. i’m not gonna say I’m wonderful at doing it though. Some days are more difficult than others, just like it is with anybody else.
It was great to hear from you! I hope you keep having a great time! Love you! Ttfn
