This past week.. or so..

This week has been really really academic. It’s kinda annoying, but we start having finals in two weeks. So, then we’ll have more time to play in the city.

So, on the one day I did go out into the city, we went to Dominus Flevit. Dominus Flevit is the traditional site where Jesus wept over Jerusalem. The view was beautiful. It looks right over the Old City and Temple Mount. There was a cute little church there too. The church has beautiful mosaics.

We went on a field trip last week to Mt. Herzl. Mt. Herzl is the Arlington Cemetery of Israel. The Mt was very beautiful. Our teacher of Jewish history took us on the field trip. He told us a lot of cool stories about the history of the State of Israel. It’s interesting how much church and state are related here. One of the fun things we saw at Mt. Herzl were groups of school children escorted by boys with huge guns.

Children at Ben Gurion’s Grave

Children at Theodore Herzl’s (a major Zionist) grave. The rocks are the way Israelis honor the dead. Rocks, instead of flowers.

Armed Guards with School Children

Two of the armed guards that accompanied a group of school children around Mt. Herzl. They look a little strange with their smiles and huge guns. :)

The other main activity we’ve had this past week is making olive oil. We spent three afternoons picking the olives, and then today, we crushed them. To pick the olives, we would climb either high up on ladders, or climb up into the tree and pick them. I ended up looking like a coal miner at the end. I touch my face too much. :) The other people would look at me and then ask how dirty their faces were. Sam, one of the guys, was the one who called me a coal miner. It was funny. We picked the olives from trees all around the Center grounds. Then today, we loaded the olives into our olive grinders and crushers. We are hoping to have enough olive oil for each of us to get a little vial of it to bring home as a souvenir.

Me after picking olives

Me after picking olives. You can’t tell how dirty I am. I’ll try to track down a picture of me in a tree.

The grinding stone

The grinding stone starting to grind our olives.

Grinding Olives

Brother Draper (my religion teacher), Me, Annalisa, and Rachel spinning the grinding stone.

“High Tech” Olive Press

Eran, the JC director (an Israeli), and our “High Tech” mechanical olive press. The brown goo dripping is the olive oil, sediment, water mix that comes out of the olives. The first hole collects all the liquid and only the pure olive oil floats high enough to pass into the second hole. Pretty smart!

“Low Tech” Olive Press

This is our “Low Tech” olive press. There are big rocks that pull down on the beam and squish the olives. The rest is really similar to the other press. In the picture is Sarah Johnson (there are 4 Sarah’s here… and we all spell our names Sarah), Me, Annalisa, and Emily.

Well, it’s late, and I should be doing homework. I hope y’all enjoyed this post. For your enjoyment I am adding one more pic. It is from Tel Aviv.

This is a EMS motorcycle. I thought it was hilarious. Night Y’all!
