Egypt Day 4

Tut’s Tomb

We arrived in Luxor on the train at 5:30 am. We got off the train, loaded into busses, and headed to the Valley of the Kings. The Valley of the Kings is where the New Kingdom Pharaohs were buried. This is where King Tutankumen (known as King Tut) was buried. The entrance to his tomb was covered by another tomb, thus saving it from grave robbers. That is why everyone has heard of King Tut. In reality he was a Pharaoh that no one would have cared about. He ruled from the age of 9 to 18 (it is believed that he was assassinated, cause people don’t usually die at age 18).

We were able to go into King Tut’s tomb and say hi to him (his body was replaced in his tomb after the excavation). King Tut was left in a gold covered casket (covered in glass so that we could see it. It was beautiful). He was found in a series of caskets: two gold covered wood caskets with a solid gold casket that contained his body. The outermost casket was the one in the tomb now. The other two are at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo (see Day 6).

We were also able to see the tombs of three other major Pharaohs. King Tut’s tomb was tiny in comparison. The tombs of Pharaohs were begun when the Pharaoh was crowned and the construction of the tomb continued until his death, when the tomb was quickly finished in 72 days while his body was mummified. Thus Tut’s tomb was small due to the small time of his reign. Pharaoh Ramses III ruled for 67 years, so his tomb was enormous. The carvings were much more elaborate and the entire tomb was painted (instead of only Tut’s burial room). The tombs were all very beautiful.

After the Valley of the Kings, we went to the Funerary Temple of Ramses III. This giant temple was built simply for Ramses body to be mummified in. It was crazy to think of the work that went into the temple that was only used once. Sadly, I dropped my camera at this temple and the lens jammed open. I ended up buying a very overpriced camera that afternoon. But, all is well and I can still take pictures!

That evening we went on a Faluka ride on the Nile. A faluka is a glorified sailboat. It was a very relaxing trip. There wasn’t much wind so we didn’t go far, but we watched the sun set over the Nile. It was beautiful. We walked back across the street to our hotel (it was awesome to be so close to the Nile!) and had dinner.

Then 16 of us paid for a 10 person taxi (it was way fun!) and we got a tour of the shopping in Luxor. It was cool. We saw how Papyrus was made and we were able to go to Luxor mall. Our taxi driver was crazy. After the taxi ride, we came back to the hotel and went to our cottage-like rooms and went to bed. Overall, it was an awesome day.
