Jordan Day 2

Petra!!!!

We woke up early on Tuesday to go beat the crowds in Petra.  We got to the gates of Petra shortly after 7 am.  There is a big open wadi (dry river bed) that you have to walk across before you get to the narrow wadi.  The narrow wadi felt a lot like Southern Utah.  Every couple of minutes, our Jordanian guide Eaab (who was with us all week), would stop and teach us something about the carvings in the walls or one of the giant tomb facades.  Most of the facades were huge, but simple.

After walking for a long ways down the narrows, we came to the end of the narrow Wadi.  Right where the wadi opens up was the Treasury!

The Treasury

It was stunning.  It is huge!  I had seen pictures of it before, but hadn’t realized how huge it was.  The carving was beautiful.  No wonder they used it in Indiana Jones!  We all stood in awe of the Treasury and took lots of pictures.  We even got a picture of all the students and teachers that were there.

Everyone in Petra

After staying at the Treasury for a while, we continued out of the wadi.  There were many old churches and new excavations going on.  One of our students is actually coming back to Petra in the summer to excavate!

When we got to the back of Petra, we climbed over 900 steps up to the Monastery, the other elaborate facade.

The Monastery

We all climbed into the room at the base of the monastery and sang songs.  It was way fun.  We’ve learned to love singing songs in churches and caves because it sounds so awesome!  After playing around at the top of the mountain…

Friends in Petra

(Carlee, me, Rachel, Kerri, James, and Emma)

… we climbed back down the steps.  There were bedouins everywhere trying to sell us stuff.  I bought a thimble inside Petra.

Shopping on a mountain

We ate lunch at the base of the mountain at a surprising good restaurant.  And then had fun goofing off on our way back out.

Under Rocks in Petra

Erin, Sarah Wagner, Rachel, Holly, me, Carlee, and Kerri under a rock.

We then rode horses out of the narrows and to the entrance.  It was a wonderful morning!  We then drove to Amman, a 4 hour drive and went to our hotel.  My roommate Carlee wasn’t feeling well (seems to be a common occurrence on field trips), so we sat around our hotel room talking and went to bed early.
